Standard Chartered Bank Appoints Chief Executive Officer, Brazil
New York, March 23, 2009
Standard Chartered Bank today announced that Airton Villafranca has joined the Bank as Chief Executive Officer and Head of Origination and Client Coverage, Brazil. Airton will be responsible for driving the country strategy and business of Standard Chartered Bank in Brazil.
“This appointment is timely, as Brazil is an important market to Standard Chartered due to the scale of its domestic economy and its growing ties with our footprint countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East,” said David Stileman, Chief Executive Officer, Americas.
With a continuous presence in Brazil for over 35 years, Standard Chartered has built a strong Wholesale Bank business in the country, including the recent acquisition of certain Brazilian assets and people from Lehman Brothers.
The Bank seeks to broaden its offerings to Brazilian wholesale banking clients -- corporations and financial institutions -- and international clients from its core markets of Asia, Africa and the Middle East seeking to conduct business with Brazil. “We are delighted to welcome an executive with outstanding country knowledge and an understanding of the financial needs of our clients in Brazil and around the world,” said Jan-Erik Andersen, Regional Head of Origination and Client Coverage, Americas.
Airton brings with him nearly 27 years of banking experience. Since 2001, he has been with Banco Santander Banespa in Brazil, most recently as International Director, where he built the bank’s presence in Brazil and had responsibility for a wide range of wholesale banking functions, including trade, foreign exchange, structured trade, and correspondent banking.
From 1997 to 2001, he was a Managing Director with Chase Brazil, where he was responsible for the Financial Institutions, Sovereigns, and Trade Finance Groups. His earlier career included positions at Chemical Bank, and their Brazilian bank, Banco Norchem.
He holds bachelor degrees from the University of Sao Paulo in Economic Science and Business Administration and is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
